Hi all! Sorry I am a few days late with my post this week, but to make up for it I have a very important topic to talk about. With it being harder than ever to pay for college many students are wondering if they should attend a community college for two years to save money and then transfer. This isĀ a very personal decision however, there are some definite pros and cons.
Pros of going to a community college for two years:
- You will save a significant amount of money. Community colleges cost a lot less than private colleges and even state schools. You will also save money by living at home rather than on a campus or in an apartment near campus.
- Most of the courses for your major are completed during junior and senior years so you will be able to take them at the college that you transfer to.
- Many community colleges have a plan in place that helpsĀ ensure that you take the best classes for a smooth transition.
- You will have more time to complete your college search and decide on a degree program.
Cons of going to a community college for two years:
- You will miss out on a lot of the experiences that come with the first couple years of living on a campus.
- Since you might not know which school you will end up at you will not necessarily be able to complete all of the freshman and sophomore prerequisites that you will need to graduate after you transfer.
- You will have less interaction with your fellow students. It is typically harder to get to know people at community colleges.

I feel like it’s better to study in a private college from the very beginning. It is a great experience of the life, better education and then you can find a well-paid job easier…
enough, isn’t it?
i have no choice but to go to community college. i orginally was signed up at a 4 year. had my schdule, roomate and i was going to the school to purchase my books when my mom said oh my god we will not have enough money. we could go on a time payment but it would still be hard for my family. at least $1000 a month for the next four years and thats with me getting the max in financial aid. why would i want to put them through that. they have worked for most of there lives and they would give me the shirt off their back. appreciate what you have and make choices that affect everyone.
The other way to save money is looking for scholarships. As for me I’m going to pass accounting exams and my ACCA provider offers several options to get scholarships or discounts.
Oh wonderful Admissions girl. I have just joined scholarshippoints.com and ran into your series of articles through it. This is very helpful! I was considering going to a community college before, but that path is now stamped out of my head. I have read you whole series! Great stuff, keep up the good work!!!!!111one
I have gone to a community college for a couple of years before entering into a four year. High school seniors who want to attend a college but are not sure what to major in, should attend a community college to acquire an AA and to take the two years to figure out which direction they should take in life and school. What do you think?
I attended a community college for about a year and a half adn planned on finishing up there; however, I left the community college and went to a university. The reason why I attended the community college was for money saving reason. And after that, transfer to a university. When I did transfer, majority of my credits went through!! As for friends, I made friends at community college and at the univeristy.
i agree with the cons. it’s a good idea to save tons of money but you really can’t get the experience of being at a university any other way! and freshman year was the best because everything was so new.
I made friends in community college but they didn’t carry over after leaving. But I also made new friends after transfering. It all depends on the type of person you are. I had a lot of fun my two years at community college.
I received my bachelor degree from a private, 4 year university. I would never take back any amount of money I spent for the friends, experiences, dorm life, etc that comes with going away to college. Now that I’m married, own a home, and work full-time the community college I’m attending now is great to have to complete prereqs and prepare to apply to a doctoral program. It’s all about your life priorities.
Im a senior in high school and am currently debating between two colleges out of state (like farther than ten hours away!). I guess a community college is something I have to think a little more about.
i would just start at 4 year college and pay everything instead of going to a community college then go to 4 year college.
Community College for me has been great – you still get to know people and now a days so many students go straight from high school that the transition to college life is easier — plus in a parents perspective I know I won’t have to worry as much about my daughter who is thinking cc is the way she will be heading.
i think alot about this, i currently go to a university and i always think about going to a community college and how much money i would’ve saved before going to college. At least i would’ve finished all of my core classes before working on my major.
I’m currently in a community college and I know many friends of mine moved on to a four year and they say that it is so worth it than going directly to a four year after high school, financially.
