Gender and the college admission process

Posted in College Admissions, College Life by Admissions Girl on 03.05.10

Ask Admissions Girl: Is it true that you could be accepted to a school because of your gender?

I don’t know why, but some colleges and universities attract more women than men, or more men than women. This isĀ  something to think about when applying to college. The college I attended was about 60% female and 40% male. People always said that the school was “easier for guys to get into” because the admissions office was trying to even the classes out.

Most schools prefer that their gender distribution is about 50-50, but that is not always possible. It has been said that some college take steps to make this distribution a reality. For example, if a male and a female are both equally qualified for one admissions spot in a heavily female school, the male may get the spot over the female. This helps the school increase its male population.

The reality is that when you are applying to college this is not something you should really worry about. Do not ever think, “I won’t get into that school because I am a girl,” or “that school has too many guys already.” Colleges want to admit the most qualified candidates regardless of gender.

This is an interesting comment. You would never think that you could get into a college based on your gender. Or that colleges care about that sort of thing. Thanks for the intellectual insight.

This is something I have never really put much thought into. It is truly hard to imagin Colleges that will provide an education based on one's gender.

Gender should not be considered. However, there are certain colleges or universities that have more students of one gender

I don't think colleges accepts people by gender. But if they do then the world really has gone mad.

That is very interesting information. I am not aware of what the gender ratio is at the college I enrolled in, but I don't think gender mattered all that much.

I agree with part of this because I am a senior in high school and I came across more females applying to college and trying to do more with their future and also when I was looking up different schools before I decided which college to apply too. The ratio between genders was not 50/50. But I am a female and I say it's not based on just the gender.

Some females strive for higher education than others do because it is harder to prove yourself to the world or people and not to be judged.

basing whether someone gets in on their gender does not seem right at all but I can understand why they would want that equal ratio.

I have no idea what the ratio is here and as far as I know, applying as to gender doesn't matter.
And I guess I really don't care either because I'm looking for an education not a husband.

    But maybe later!!!

The school I will be attending is like 60 or 70% females, but as far as I know they would never deny a girl admission just because of gender. This school has an amazing reputation, but is a very religious private school so they probably understand it if less guys want to attend. It's Franciscan University of Steubenville. <- amazing school wether or not I do end up going there.

Lol I know how this is. The school I applied to has I believe a 3-1 female-male ratio, and the President during a dinner party joked about it. They don't accept people based on gender; it's just more females apply to the college.
